I was commissioned by a documentary photography magazine to shoot a behind the scenes story on drag queens. The editor said "use your contacts." I didn't have any, but I knew someone, who knew someone. It all worked out from there. Thoughout the project I found the subjects to be a charming mix of razor sharp wit, predictable cattiness and gracious hospitality. They were after all, letting a far from perfect stranger into their homes, ... with a camera. What could go wrong? Overall I found the drag queens easier to deal with than many CEOs and celebrities I've shot over the years.
